Spring Weeds About to Spring
Once again, I know it seems crazy, but it is already time to think about Spring weeds here in the Hill Country. Crabgrass can begin germinating as early as late January. This year, with the mild temps and frequent rain, it will likely be happening any day now. It is a good idea to have corn gluten on hand and apply it within the next 2 weeks.
Corn gluten works by preventing about 60% of the weed seeds from germinating. So, it will help to get control of the weeds. No, it does not completely eradicate weeds. As in all things organic, a healthy balance is the goal. A combination of hand weeding and corn gluten every season will greatly reduce the number of weeds over time. Eventually, that 60% control will be for a few weeds rather than a lawn full of them.
