Time to think about Spring Weeds!
I know it seems crazy, but it is already time to think about Spring weeds here in the Hill Country. Crabgrass can begin germinating as early as late January. This year, with the freezing temps, it will likely be closer to the first or second week of February. It is a good idea to have corn gluten on hand so that it can be applied at the correct time. That is, as soon as temperatures begin to warm up and we have a good rain.
Corn gluten works by preventing about 60% of the weed seeds from germinating. So, it will help to get control of the weeds. No, it does not completely eradicate weeds. As in all things organic, a healthy balance is the goal. A combination of hand weeding and corn gluten every season will greatly reduce the number of weeds over time. Eventually, that 60% control will be for a few weeds rather than a lawn full of them.
